The environmental impact of all human activities, including fashion has reached a tipping point. The plastic waste polluting our land and oceans has put our natural resources at greater risk. It is important to innovate, exercise caution, and find solutions to address our growing plastic waste problems. That’s why, Splash, as part of our larger commitment to sustainability, has introduced recycled polyester as a more environmentally friendly and game-changing alternative to virgin polyester.
Why recycled polyester?
Recycling just one ton of plastic bottles can save around 3.8 barrels of oil and prevent the emission of around 2 tons of CO2.
Unlike virgin polyester which uses raw materials like petroleum that has a huge environmental cost, recycled polyester makes use of discarded plastic PET bottles. This process reduces the need for virgin materials and diverts waste from landfills. Additionally, producing recycled polyester requires less energy and water than virgin polyester, reducing its carbon footprint and conserving natural resources.
The benefits worth the switch
Despite the environmental challenges, polyester is still used in fashion, mainly due to its unique properties and the high performance of the fiber. The best part of recycled polyester is that it is similar to the properties of virgin polyester; it promises:
Durability and Performance: Recycled polyester is durable, lightweight, and moisture-wicking, making it ideal for various applications, including athletic wear, swimwear, and outdoor gear. Thanks to innovative technologies used at Splash, the quality of recycled polyester is on par with virgin polyester, providing excellent performance in terms of durability, color retention, and finish.
Versatility: Recycled polyester can be produced in a wide range of colors and finishes, offering sustainable choices for you.
To a greater cause: By converting plastic waste into fabric, recycled polyester helps to reduce landfill waste, conserve oil, and lower greenhouse gas emissions. It’s a crucial step in mitigating pollution and preserving our natural resources.
Splash’s commitment to sustainability
At Splash, we are committed to integrating sustainable practices into our collections. Last year, we successfully increased the usage of recycled polyester in our collections across Splash Brands.
One of the challenges of using recycled polyester is ensuring that the materials are properly sourced and processed. Recycled polyester can sometimes contain harmful chemicals or additives that can impact human health and the environment. To address this, we have implemented strict standards for sourcing and processing our recycled polyester. Each style labelled Recycled Polyester is required to have the Global Recycled Standard (GRS) certification. This ensures that the materials are traceable, processed without harmful chemicals, and meet specific environmental and social criteria.
Join the Green movement
We believe that, together, we can turn the tide on plastic waste and help create a greener, safer planet. While we remain steadfast in our mission to achieve absolute circularity and bring you more environmentally favorable options, we ask you to join us by setting out on a journey of conscious shopping and choosing sustainably and ethically sourced materials like recycled polyester.
