WAVES OF CHANGE: BIODEGRADABLE COMPOSTABLE PACKAGING

Plastic waste is perhaps one of the largest issues that the world is facing at the moment. With far-reaching consequences that could endanger our natural resources and oceans, plastic pollution is a fight that requires all hands-on deck. The fashion industry in particular is inundated with environmental challenges, and the demand for sustainable alternatives has never been more critical. This is one of the reasons why, as part of our larger sustainability initiative, Splash has taken the pledge to reduce the negative impact of our business processes on the environment.

The need for compostable packaging

From raw material manufacturing to the packing of products, the use of polybags has been the standard practice in the fashion industry. Though polybags are great at preserving clothes and ensuring their longevity, they also cause substantial damage to the environment. Furthermore, these plastics that get dumped in landfills also end up polluting the oceans and endangering marine ecosystems.

Plastic waste is entering our oceans at an unprecedented rate of over 8 million metric tons per year, and we need to act immediately to put an end to the use of single-use plastics at all stages of our product lifecycle.

To be the change

At Splash, sustainability is at the heart of all our processes, and our ethos always follows a simple principle: For the good of people, for the good of the planet. Thus began our commitment to eliminate single-use plastics by finding more eco-friendly alternatives. Today, by replacing our yearly use of 80 million plastic bags with biobased compostable bags, we have reduced our material carbon footprint by approximately 300 tons per year.

Key features of our compostable packaging

Natural origin: These bags are made from corn starch that disintegrates in just 180 days. Unlike plastic bags that take over hundreds of years to decompose, these alternates are quick to disintegrate and easy to dispose of after their useful lives.

Biodegradable: Unlike conventional packaging that may end up in landfills or oceans, compostable packaging breaks down into organic matter, contributing to nutrient-rich soil.

Closed-loop, circular economies: compostable materials contribute to the creation of closed-loop processes and circular economies, where waste becomes a resource in the form of manure that enriches the soil rather than a pollutant that endangers natural resources.

Fast-track efforts to achieve a greener future

By continuing to take these small yet significant steps, Splash hopes to be a shining example of how businesses can operate sustainably while still offering our customers the same variety and quality. As we strive to create a more sustainable future, compostable packaging emerges as a beacon of hope, offering a solution to the environmental challenges posed by conventional materials, but this is not a one-time initiative but a constant endeavour that requires innovation, retrospection, and reinvention. While we lead the way on environmental stewardship and sustainable fashion initiatives, we hope that you will continue to ride the waves of change with us and inspire our journey.
